Tim isn’t a suspect, but he is suspicious: all geeky and smart and socially awkward yet somehow he managed to sleep with Abby. There’s got to be something Tony isn’t seeing. Maybe it has something to do with the fact Tim is so open-minded he’s willing to get a tattoo just to get a girl, that’s kind of pathetic in a way, desperate, Tony finds it laughable. Except for the fact it worked.
Although Abby eventually grew bored with Tim, and yes he’s pestered but no one ever gave him a straight answer, that’s not the point, Tony became even more interested. He wasn’t insane enough to harass McGee while he was in Norfolk but that didn’t stop Tony doing research, doing a Google search, getting his background info through his Norfolk personnel file. He may have been little less than obvious with his... observations, being so vocal about it that Gibbs even ends up inviting the guy to their team.
Now Tim is on Tony’s team, it’s a little easier to keep an eye on him but it still doesn’t give him any answers. Tony doesn’t really like it when Tim talks to other people, the way he flirts with Abby, the way he brown-noses up to Gibbs, and that’s when it clicks for Tony. In fact, it’s one of Gibbs’ rules. The one about two ways of following someone, Tony clearly needs to follow the first way. From now on, Tim isn’t going to notice anybody except for Tony (and maybe others whilst they’re working, but Tony will try to do enough observing for the both of them.)
It’s easy when they’re at work, Tony is already such a magnificent presence, it’s not hard to make himself the centre of Tim’s world. At least it shouldn’t be, but then there are dates Tony doesn’t know about, MOAS (mother of all secrets) Tim is able to keep. That’s another Gibbs Rule, the one about secrets and it’s not fair Tim follows it so exactly, not telling anybody. Gibbs’ rule says he’s allowed to tell one other person, that person should be Tony!
Tony is stealthy when he follows Tim outside of work. Parked outside Tim’s complex, watching as woman after woman leaves Tim apartment (okay, there have been about eight women in five years but that’s not the point, they’re women Tim never told him about.) This latest one is a bitch, Tony has been following her and knows she’s seeing another man. He’s been gathering the nerve to tell Tim.
It looks like he might not have to, he can hear the yelling from out on the street. Well, she’s doing a lot of the yelling, it sounds like Tim’s doing a lot of crying but that’s just Tony’s impression. She storms out, right past Tony. Tony knocks on Tim’s door.
He’s sick of following Tim, now he just wants to be with him.
